Vineyard
We’ve been buying grapes from the historic Haynes Vineyard, located in the Coombsville AVA, since 1975. The vineyard’s cool-climate makes it one of the star sites in all of Napa County for Burgundian varietals. In addition to the climate, the unique soil at Haynes—a concentrated pocket of alluvial gravel, cobblestone, and volcanic ash—consistently produce wines with nuance and minerality. This Chardonnay is from the Robert Young clonal selection at Haynes.
Winemaking
Every harvest we aim to honor this site by making the wine with minimal intervention, to showcase site and nuance. After an early-morning hand harvest, we whole-cluster pressed the Chardonnay in a traditional horizontal basket press that allows for gentle extraction of juice. After pressing, the juice settled in tank for 24 hours and then wild-fermented in mix of neutral and lightly-used French Oak barrels. The wine went through spontaneous malolactic fermentation and sur lie aged for ten months before bottling.
Winemaker’s Notes
The 2021 Haynes Chardonnay has a purity of fruit that is immediately appealing, with citrus and lemon cream on the nose, a lively palate, and wonderful balance. A Chardonnay that is at once elegant and refined and very approachable.
