2019 Haynes Vineyard Syrah

$42.00

A beautiful, restrained Syrah hailing from historic Haynes Vineyard. Taste this wine over the course of an hour and it will change dramatically, with aromatics of black olive, savory herbs, and white pepper giving way to iron, blueberry, and a dense meatiness. Our 2019 vintage stands alone, so get it while it lasts!

Vineyard

We’ve been buying fruit from the Haynes Vineyard, located in the Coombsville AVA, since 1975. The vineyard sits in a concentrated pocket of alluvial gravel, cobblestone, and volcanic ash, resulting in excellent drainage and mineral-rich soils. Our last Tulocay Syrah from Haynes was in 2009, so we were thrilled to purchase just over two tons of Syrah in 2019.

Winemaking

We brought in two different clones of Syrah, 877 and 174, and fermented them in open top vessels, with about 33 percent whole cluster and using native yeasts. After 10 days on skins, with twice daily punchdowns, we gently pressed at dryness in a traditional horizontal basket press, and aged the wine in once-used and neutral French Oak barrels for 19 months. The wine was bottled without fining or filtration.

Winemaker’s Notes

Beautiful ruby in color, the wine’s aromatics open with black olive, white pepper, iron, and savory herbs. Leave open for aeration and the nose changes to floral, red fruits, and graphite. Silky and tense on the palate with great balance and a savory finish. This wine benefits from a good decant and will continue to open in the glass over the course of a meal.
