Vineyard

We are very excited to offer this singular bottling of this Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon, which comes from a small, meticulously-farmed vineyard right on Highway 29. The 2017 vintage started with moderate days and cool nights in August allowing for even ripening. A heat wave in early September led to an early harvest. This was fortuitous, as all grapes were in before the fires started in October. 

Winemaking

After a hand harvest, we crushed the fruit into open top fermenters, where it underwent a two-week fermentation, with twice daily punchdowns. At dryness, we pressed in a traditional vertical basket press, and aged the wine in a mix of once and twice used barrels. The wine was racked two to three times a year during elevage and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Winemaker’s Notes

The 2017 Rutherford has aromatics of green olive, cassis, rich red fruit, and wild herbs, with great tannin structure and a balanced, restrained finish. It is high-toned and restrained, with unmistakable varietal character. This wine is a good candidate to cellar for some time, though if drinking now a health decant will make this wine shine.
